I have written several articles here on the rise of violence as a "Sign of the Times" in relation to Bible prophecy. Each time I have used ISIS, those brutal Islamic extremist terrorists as my primary illustration. In Gen. 6:11 it says the "the whole earth was filled with violence" in the days of Noah. That was one reason God destroyed the earth and everybody on it (except Noah's family) with a world-wide flood. Jesus said: "As it was in the days of Noah, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be". So I guess we are safe in concluding we live in the last days, because truly the kind of violence perpetrated by these Islamic radicals is horrific.
But Now It Has Come to America
But now it has come to America. We boast ourselves in having a peaceful democratic society, governed by the rule of law. But what do we see on the news channels in recent days? Gangs of unruly, lawbreaking radical leftists throwing stones at the police, burning the American flag, smashing windows of stores, jumping on top of police cars--totally out of control. This is not protest, it is anarchy. This is not democracy, it is criminal behavior. Peaceful protests are a way of American life, and the right of free speech should never be abridged. But these are not peaceful protests, in the fashion of Dr. Martin Luther King's marches--this is terrorism by thugs.
For years, the Middle East has been a hotbed of terrorist uprisings. Gangs of angry youth fill the streets throwing rocks at the Israel security forces. Yet, if Israel even dares to strike back, they are condemned by the United Nations. We are just one step away from this kind of lawlessness and anarchy that characterizes the Middle East and many Central and South American countries. Unfortunately, violence has come to America, and our whole system as a free democratic society is being threatened by those ultra-liberal groups that are out of control. Not to mention the fact that this kind of lawless behavior is ruining our long-standing reputation in the world as a peace-loving people.
What Does the Bible Say
David wrote: "I have seen violence and strife in the city" (Psa. 11:5). Last year, when our family was attending a baseball game in Baltimore, we got caught in the middle of one of these awful "out of control" protests on our way to the stadium. We saw the police actually being attacked, and forced to retreat. What kind of country have we become? The entire episode in Baltimore was a travesty of law and order. Nowhere in the Bible are we told to take the law into our own hands if we don't like something that has happened, or something that upsets us. The prophet Ezekiel declared: "they have filled the land with violence" (Ezek. 8:17). This was true of the Babylonians in 586 B.C., and it is quickly becoming true of America in 2016. God speaks against this gang-style rebellion and civil (or un-civil) disobedience when He says: "him who loveth violence His soul hateth" (Psa. 11:5). Jesus preached: "Do violence to no man" (Luke 3:14).
Yes, what is going on in the form of protests against the police, and against political candidates, is very disheartening to those of us who love our country, respect authority, and believe in abiding by the laws of the land. I can only wonder how close we are to outright anarchy, the disintegration of our nation, and hence, the coming of the Lord. We need to "pray for all who are in authority over us, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life" (I Tim.2:1). Right now, they certainly need our prayers.
