The Spirit of Giving

December 22, 2017 0 Comments

One of the things that makes Christmas such a special time of the year is the spirit of giving, the way people open up their hearts and pocketbooks to those in need. In a world characterized by selfishness and greed, Christmas has a way of bringing out a truly wonderful and refreshing change in the souls of humanity. People donate to shoe boxes for Haiti, toys for tots, their local food pantry, the Salvation Army, military families, and other charitable causes. As a pastor, I always loved the month of December because church giving was about double what the regular giving was in other months.
Do you remember when you were a child and you gave some little cheap, homemade, otherwise unimpressive gift to your mother at Christmas and she would ooooo and aaaahhhh over it like it was the greatest things that she ever received? Can you recall the joy you had as a parent watching your children open up their gifts on Christmas morning? Yes, it is the feeling of love and joy that you derive from gift giving that makes Christmas what it is. There's nothing else like it.
When it comes to giving, God gave us the example. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son" (John 3:16). Paul's testimony was: "He loved me and gave himself for me" (Gal. 2:20). Husbands are exhorted in Scripture to "love their wives, even as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for it". It's not the gifts we receive at Christmas that is the key thing, it's the LOVE behind the gifts that makes them so meaningful. And that is why my mother would get all teared up over a simple potholder I made for her.
Jesus Himself commented on the spirit of giving in Matt. 6:11, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him"?
And so, from the Seefried family to yours, have a very blessed and merry Christmas.
