The Perfect Gift

December 23, 2016 0 Comments

This time of year, you see shoppers bustling frantically all around the stores and Malls searching for that "perfect gift". Christmas is drawing near, and so the pursuit of those last few gifts becomes urgent, sometimes even stressful.

With this in mind, I thought it would be timely for me to share with you, on this Christmas Eve, what the Bible says about the "Perfect Gift". In James 1:17 we read: "Every good gift, and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of Lights, with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning". God says the Perfect Gift came down from heaven, so you can't find it here on earth. No amount of self effort can find it, and no amount of money can buy it. It is God's gift--His Son, who was born on Christmas day for you and me. Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable Gift (II Cor. 9:15).

So let me try to explain to you why Jesus, who came down from heaven to bring us salvation, is the Perfect Gift. There are at least 4 reasons:

First, This Gift was PERSONAL

God's gift of salvation has YOUR name on it! Truly Jesus died for the sins of the whole world, but He specifically and personally died for YOU. Listen to the Christmas announcement again: For unto YOU is born this day a Savior (Luke 2:10). And the prophet Isaiah exclaimed: For unto US a child is born; unto US a Son is given (Isa. 9:6). God's gift is not some kind of meaningless, impersonal, thing. It is not like junk mail sent to "current resident of". Dear friend, Jesus came from heaven for YOU, He died for YOU. And it is only be accepting Him (God's Perfect Gift) as your personal Savior that you can have eternal life. Yes, salvation is very personal.

Second, This Gift was PRACTICAL

What do I mean by that? It meets our greatest need. We all have received gifts of things we really don't need and it's hard to show happiness over such impractical and useless items. But God's gift was extremely practical. It was what we needed the most. The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom. 6:23). Think of it, what else could be more valuable, useful, helpful, needful for a person under the penalty of sin (spiritual death), than the gift of ETERNAL LIFE? Christ was exactly what mankind needed the most.

Third, This Gift was PRECIOUS

Sometimes we are deeply moved to realize how much money somebody spent on a certain gift for us. But no human gift ever given cost more than the price Jesus paid for our redemption. He gave His all. He shed His precious blood on the cross to pay for our salvation. We can't buy our own salvation because Jesus already paid the price. No wonder Peter says: Unto you therefore who believe, He is PRECIOUS (I Pet. 2:7).

Fourth, This Gift was PERMANENT

Even the most expensive gifts we receive do not last forever. Even the "Grinch" made a big point of this fact in the story "The Grinch That Stole Christmas". Everything eventually ends up in the trash. All the gifts we exchange at Christmas, even the most meaningful ones, don't stand the test of time. I hate to put such a damper as this on your Christmas, but you need to realize that 1000 years from now the only thing that will count, the only thing that will matter, is your relationship with Jesus Christ--and whether or not you received HIM as God's perfect gift for you. Listen again to Paul's argument: *The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord". He is the Gift that is permanent, eternal, lasts forever.

So take a few moments on Christmas Day to say Thank You to God for giving you His Son, His perfect gift, His salvation.
