Showdown with Syria

As I write this, our President and his top military advisers are contemplating an attack on Syria in retaliation for their use of chemical weapons on innocent civilians, including little children. This happened once before and our President launched air strikes against the airfield where the chemical weapons originated. Now, this brutal dictator, Assad, is at it again. He should have been gone long ago, but here he is, using these illegal weapons (nerve agents) to terrorize his own people, only this time with the help of the Russians and Iranians.
It is not hard to imagine how this incident could develop into a full scale all-out war in the Middle East. Russia has been supporting this cruel dictator all along, and Iran wants to use Syria as an extension of their influence that would stretch all the way from Iran, through Syria, into Lebanon where Hezbollah is already serving the interests of Iran. Russia stated that if we attack Syria, they would shoot down our cruise missiles. And then it begins, World War III.
The entire world would quickly polarize behind either the United States and Israel (and other Western democracies if they are cowards) or Syria/Russia/Iran. We don't have to stretch our imagination to see the very real possibility of this thing escalating into a major world war here.
I'm glad this morning for two things: first, that I know the Lord and know that nothing happens apart from His sovereign plan, and second, that God is on the side of Israel, past, present, and future.
What we need right now is another one of God's great demonstrations of His allegiance to Israel, like the days of Elisha the prophet. The Syrians, under Benhadad, had surrounded Samaria (northern Israel) and established a food blockade in order to starve Israel to death. But in the middle of the night God made a great noise--the sound of chariots and horses--and the entire Syrian army fled from their tents. Four lepers from Israel, deciding it would be better to surrender to the Syrians than starve to death (they were dying anyway!) discovered the empty tents with all the food, silver, gold, horses, etc. still remaining in the Syrian encampments (II Kings 6:24-7:20). I believe the same God who fought against Syria that day will fight for the survival of Israel today, according to Bible prophecy. And don't kid yourself. This isn't just about chemical weapons. It is more broadly about Iran's threat to destroy Israel. Why in the world Obama ever agreed to give Iran billions of dollars to secure a "nuclear arms treaty" still boggles my mind.
Today, more than ever before, we need to pray for our country's leaders, that they would have wisdom in this crisis, and that they would always remain loyal to God's people, Israel.
