Mass Shooting In Las Vegas

Well, it wasn't too hard figuring out what to write about this week. The mass shooting in Las Vegas has filled the news for four days now. And rightly so. It was an atrocity of unparalleled magnitude: 58 lives lost and hundreds critically wounded by this deranged gunman. We still don't know what this guy's motive was but we do know what evil looks like. We have seen it and it is repulsive to all who value human life.
Paul wrote to Timothy that "in the last days perilous times will come" (II Tim. 3:1). I believe we are living in those perilous times Paul talked about. And Jesus prophesied in His Olivet Discourse: "Because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold" (Matt. 24:11). Is there anybody who would disagree with the observation that this awful act had to come from somebody who was cold-hearted?
The lack of respect for human life, unfortunately, is increasing in our secular-humanist society at an alarming rate. We see it in abortion, I.S.I.S. terrorism, inner-city gang related murders, and mass shootings.
While many are calling for new gun laws, maybe it is time to ask a more basic question: What is going on in people's hearts to cause them to devalue life to this degree? Jesus taught us that the heart of the problem is the heart of man: "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies" (Matt. 15:19).
If there is one thing this incident proves, it is this: the words of Jesus are spot on.
Our prayers go out to all the families affected by this terrible tragedy. As Christians, we "weep with those who weep". May the God of all comfort be with those who are suffering the loss of a loved one.
