Happy Birthday to ME

"The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength, they be fourscore years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away" (Psa. 90:10). This Tuesday, June 12th, is my birthday, and I turn that magic biblical number (70)--so this Bible verse is for me. It sounds like the next ten years are going to be a lot of fun.
After the great Noahic flood God changed the lifespan of mankind drastically. Instead of living 800-900 years like Methusaleh (see Gen. 11:10-25), man's lifespan was reduced to around 70 years, or, if perhaps one's strength holds out, even 80 years. My mother is 91 now, let's hope I have inherited her genetic makeup! At any rate, biblically speaking, I am getting closer to that day when my time is up, and I "fly away". This verse is where that song comes from: "I'll Fly Away". There are some days when I am being so annoying that Nancy wishes I would fly away (not DIE, just stop bugging her!).
From this point on, every birthday will be a celebration of the goodness of God and the blessings of life. The preceding verse says: "We spend our years as a tale that is told". Truly, the older you get, the more your life is like a story to tell. Though I am already feeling the aches and pains that typically characterize a 70 year old man, I am so grateful for the strength God gives me each day.
Hopefully I will heed the words of the Psalmist to my own life: "So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom" (vs. 12). After all, it's not how long we live, it's what we do for God that counts when life is over.
