Two mass shootings this past week illustrate the truth that we are living in the last days. Jesus, in the Olivet Discourse, prophesied that in the "last days", lawlessness would abound, and the love of many would grow cold (Matt. 24:12). Could there possibly be any greater example of Jesus' words, of cold hearts, than what we have witnessed in these brutal mass killings?
There are those who will blame it on guns. There will be those who blame it on our President's rhetoric. There will be those who blame it on violent video games. There will those who blame it on racist hatred. But the real reason for these awful senseless attacks lies far deeper.
The heart of the matter is the human heart, which is "deceitful above all things and desperately WICKED." (Jer. 17:9) These shootings must be labeled for what they are: acts of pure EVIL. We should be talking about good and evil, not gun laws. We should be talking about the depravity of man, not the policies of the President.
The Apostle Paul perfectly describes the age in which we live: "In the last days perilous times will come . . .for men will be unloving, unforgiving, without self control, brutal, despisers of good" (II Tim. 3:1-3).
What kind of sick, twisted soul would mow down innocent people with seemingly no emotional feelings? Only a person who is the embodiment of evil.
These are certainly trying times, but it is good to know that we belong to the Lord, that our soul is safe in Him, even if our body is vulnerable to the attacks of evil men. Jesus said: "Fear not him who is able to destroy the body, but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell!" (Matt. 10:28)
