Lately around here (Virginia's Shenandoah Valley) we have enjoyed some beautiful summer days, and I am reminded why I like this season of the year so much. Nancy's flower gardens are a brilliant testament to the glory of God's creation (and her hard work!). The picture you see on this blog was taken in our back yard--the crepe myrtle bush in full bloom.

All of this reminds me of the fact that God has revealed Himself to mankind (theologically) in 3 distinct ways:

FIRST, God has revealed Himself through His CREATION. Psalm 19:1 says "The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork". And the Apostle Paul tells us that mankind is "without excuse" when it comes to knowing about God because of the witness of God's creation. "Because that which may be known of God is manifest to them; for God has shown it unto them. For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse" (Rom. 1:19-20). Yes, God has given us a magnificent revelation of Himself through the creation, so that people all around the world can look up in the sky (or behold the beauty of flowers in bloom) and say: only an intelligent designer could have made all this!

SECOND, God has revealed Himself through His WORD. Because God's creation can only demonstrate His existence, and because this same God wanted us to know Him better, He gave us His Word. The Bible is God's special revelation of Himself to mankind. Through its pages we learn of His love, His power, His sovereignty, and His plan of salvation for mankind. Truly, the Scriptures declare to us all the TRUTH of God that we should know.

THIRD, God has revealed Himself through His SON: Jesus Christ. "No man has seen God at any time, but the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him" (John 1:18). Yes, Christ came to show us the Father--to reveal all the attributes of God. He answered Philip's inquiry to "show us the Father" by saying: "He that has seen Me has seen the Father" (Jn. 14:9). All that may be known of God is revealed in the person of God's Son, Jesus Christ. Through Jesus, we can know God and come to God in a personal relationship.

So the next time you gaze at one of God's great works of creation on a summer day, remember these 3 fantastic ways God has REVEALED Himself to us:
1. Through His Creation
2. Through His Word
3. Through His Son.

And then bow your head and say: Thank you, Lord, for showing us who You are.
